Raw methanol is widely used in the gas industry in order to combat and prevent hydrate formation in gas production and transportation of natural and associated gas for the testing of new wells and boreholes renovated and partly for the dehydration of natural gas.
In the chemical industry methanol is used as the precursor . In the largest amount of methanol used to obtain formaldehyde , acetic acid , a synthetic rubber , as well as the methylating agent in the manufacture of dimethyl terephthalate , methylamine , methyl methacrylate , pentaerythritol, hexamine . A large amount of methanol consumed for various chemicals such chlorophos , malathion , methyl chloride and methyl bromide , dimethyl sulphate , vinyl methyl ether , dimethylaniline dimetilhlortiofosfata , methyl mercaptan .
Methanol is used in the production of film , amines, polyvinyl chloride , urea and ion exchange resins , dyestuffs and intermediates, the solvent in the paint industry.
In the oil refining industry methanol serves as a selective solvent to clean gasoline from mercaptans and azeotropic agent in the allocation of toluene distillation. In a mixture of methanol and ethylene glycol is used for toluene extraction of gasoline.
Methanol has a high octane number and can be used as part of a motor fuel
